They finally concluded it was a software problem. Replaced the hard drive, the logic board, the hard drive cable (thank God this was all under warranty), same behavior. Took it to the Genius Bar and we tried everything. Got so bad that my laptop became unusable. Her computer would randomly start running so slowly it was like it had no available RAM, then the same thing happened to mine. Everything was fine for a few weeks, and then trouble hit. This was about 9 months or so, ago, a very recent version.

At a prior MacUpdate Promo I purchased VirusBarrier for both my macbook pro and my wife's. In the strongest terms possible I urge everyone to avoid Intego's products like the plague. I dealt with Customer Services for 3 months and finally asked for and received a refund. Usually there would be application after application listed with a message that Virus Barrier had blocked it for 60 seconds for suspicious activity. I started looking in the Console logs after rebooting. I'd have to power off, sometimes resulting in damaged files on the Hard Drive (thank goodness for Disk Warrior). I could not start Activity Monitor, and usually I could not even restart my computer. Often everything would stop working and more and more programs developed the SBBD sequentially. Instead of a slow, barely usable MacBook Pro I'd get a spinning beach ball of death. I'd kill the process with Activity Monitor and things would return to normal, although often another of the processes would then start taking 100% CPU. Only 1 would be in this state, there would be several to many others running just fine.

Using Activity Monitor I'd find a "virusvarriers" taking 100% CPU. Using X6 version my computer sometimes would run slow and hot. A lot of nice features including a 2 way fire wall, setting the features based on location, etc. The new version is cleaner and better looking. I've used Intego's Suite for some time, and jumped at the latest version. I won’t run VB/NB until Intego cleans its apps up.

Now, I don’t really care if the problem is an interaction with other apps (I routinely run 18–20 apps and around 30 Preference Panes and/or Background Apps), but when and app crashes my system, I consider it to be malware. I temporarily unplugged the power to reset the SMC, booted it up again, was able to reset PRAM, booted into Safe mode, and when it came up, uninstalled X8 and rebooted in normal mode: no problem since. I force started again and held down the cmd-opt-PR keys to reset PRAM: nothing. I forced started again and held the opt key to bring up my external bootable disc: nothing. I force started again and held down the Shift key to start in Safe Mode: nothing. I forced shutdown by holding the start button and then restarted by pressing it again: it hung with the spinning wheel of death. The next morning, the CPU wouldn’t wake up when I clicked the mouse, and with energy saving turning off the screen, I couldn’t even see if there were any tell tails as to why it crashed on the screen: pressing the startup button to wake the machine up did nothing.

It is, however, a problem in general with VB and Intego should have fixed it long ago.Ī few weeks ago, I purchased an upgrade to VB/NB X8 and installed in on my MacPro and set it up to do a complete scan of the 500 GB Disk overnight. With 24 GB of RAM, this wasn’t a problem. Now, VB has always been a memory and CPU hog because it spawns multiple processes to scan files, and until I upgraded RAM from 8 GB to 24 GB, I used to go into Activity Monitor and Kill five or six of the spawned processes every time things got sluggish.

I have been using VirusBarrier since X2 and was using VirusBarrier/NetBarrier X6 on Mountain Lion until a few Months ago when I did a clean install of Mavericks and never got around to upgrading and installing VB/NB X8 until about two weeks ago. MacPro3,1 Dual Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.8 Ghz, 24 GB RAM, 500 GB HD, OS X 10.9.5, Mavericks. Note: The price for this purchase is that of a one-year subscription.
